Standing seam and exposed-fastener panels are different roof systems. Start with the fastening method, then ask whether the specific product fits your roof and the proposed installation.
The basic distinction
Standing seam systems conceal their main panel fasteners. Exposed-fastener panels have fasteners through the panel face. Standing seam also includes several seam and attachment designs; a product name and installation manual are more useful than the broad category alone.
| Decision | Standing seam | Exposed fastener |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Raised panel seams; concealed main panel attachment. | Panel profile and visible face fasteners. |
| Specification | Identify the seam design and attachment method. | Identify the panel and approved fastener details. |
| Project fit | Check the exact product’s roof, substrate and installation requirements. | Check the exact product’s roof, substrate and installation requirements. |
| Care | Ask for the manufacturer’s inspection and maintenance instructions. | Ask how the panel, fasteners and associated components should be inspected. |
Questions beyond the panel
The selected roof has to work at walls, edges, valleys and penetrations. Ask how those details will be handled, which materials are included and who is responsible for installation. A photo can communicate an appearance, but it cannot substitute for the system specification.
Use manufacturer information
Western States Metal Roofing’s standing seam overview describes clipped, mechanically seamed and nail-flange options. Its exposed-fastener overview describes that product category. These are reference examples, not a statement that a particular product has been selected for your property.
